Our heritage

Three generations. One factory. One family name on every product.

Dr Richard Eckstein began compounding preparations for delicate skin in 1949, working from a pharmacist's understanding of what skin can absorb and what it cannot. He founded the company with his wife, Linde Eckstein, whose name the parent company still carries.

The laboratory is still in Oberasbach, still family-owned, and still small enough that every batch carries the same name it did in 1949.

Doctor Eckstein has never been a large company, and has never wanted to be. Here is what that means in practice.

An independent family brand

The same family has owned and run Doctor Eckstein for three generations. Research, formulation and manufacture happen under one roof, so every decision is made by the people whose name is on each product.

Science-driven formulation

A pharmacist founded the company, and that thinking still shapes it. Each active is chosen for a specific skin condition, not because it is fashionable.

Made in Oberasbach, Germany

Everything is made at the company's own site in Oberasbach, Germany. Nothing is outsourced or licensed to another company, and production follows EU Good Manufacturing Practice.

Supplied in South Africa

Doctor Eckstein is imported into South Africa under licence by Morenga Cosmetics. As a professional skincare brand, we partner with trained skincare therapists to provide clients with products and treatments to enhance skin health and longevity. Doctor Eckstein offers a comprehensive and highly tailored range to combat the harsh South African climate and our outdoor lifestyles.

Biocompatible means in harmony with the skin. At Doctor Eckstein® it also means in harmony with the environment[remove this text] — an approach that takes in the social and the economic as well as the environmental.

The formulations are built from skin-physiological components: ingredients that occur naturally in the body, are biochemically close to the body’s own substances, or mimic their functions well enough that the skin can naturally and willingly tolerates them.

Ingredients, packaging, machinery and services come largely from partners close to the company’s headquarters in Oberasbach — a decision made on economic and social grounds as much as environmental ones.
Recyclable packaging
Glass, non-hazardous plastic and paper, with FSC-certified paper for the outer cartons. The printers, glass and plastic makers are predominantly regional.
No animal testing
The products have never been tested on animals, and are not sold in countries that require animal testing for market approval.
